Artist Statement

I am interested in pictures of landscapes and nature that moves the viewers because they are able to capture nature in a way that we don’t normally see. Nature is something that is often passed by without our noticing them. A lot of the times they serve as fillers to our living environments; because of their stationary characteristic, it ceases to catch our attention after a certain period of time.

What I have discovered, when having had the time to really take in the scenes of nature, or when it happens to catch my attention, I have been able to notice things about these scenes that I would not have otherwise seen. A lot of the details that draw me in are things that have to do with form, color, and texture.

I use shallow depth of field to highlight the details of the scenes that caught my attention; in this way, the viewers are forced to see what I see. I also emphasize textures and color using enhancements via Photoshop to make more deliberate to the viewers of these details, sometimes even causing these pictures to become hyper-realistic or otherworldly.

For the sea picture, I really wanted a strong white border to hold the scene, almost making it look like you’re peering out a white seaside cottage window. I believe by doing that, I will create a more of a 'setting' for the image to rest on, if that makes any sense.

For the fence picture, I chose not to put an obvious frame to it because I wanted it to seem more immediate. I want the viewer to automatically concentrate on the details on the wood, as if they are looking through a telescope.

Some pondering questions regarding my 'series' thus far....

Does the wooden fence image fit in with the rest of the images that are completely natural? The image focuses on texture and color as well, but I am not sure it is a little too different than the rest. Also, my images as of late have focused mostly on the micro/macro aspects of nature. I am wondering if the images of landscapes fit less well with the rest that are more emphasized on the macro details.
